Once upon a time I was an avid runner. Back in high school I competed in both track and cross country, but lost touch with running in college. After graduation adult life took over and I honestly never thought I would get back into it. Sure I’d run the occasionally 5k fun run, but I was positive that I lacked both the time and ability to train consistently. In June of 2015 a friend convinced me to join her for a 100 day running streak. For 100 days I was to run at least one consecutive mile. And for the most part that is what I would do, run one mile at a nice, comfortable 10+ min pace. About a month into the streak I started to notice something odd. This friend, who I once begged to run her first 5k, was now beginning to out pace me! That is when she introduced me to her secret weapon, Lauren! I attended Power Hour one Saturday morning and had no idea what I was getting into. Lauren used a variety of moves to work muscles I didn’t even know I had. When it was over I felt both exhausted and invigorated, and couldn’t wait to go back again! Then a couple of classes in, we did something a little crazy. Lauren and I met for a virtual meeting to discuss an individualized training plan for my very first half marathon! For thirteen weeks Lauren pushed me to reach goals I never thought possible. At times the training was hard, really hard, but she was always there with the motivation I needed. Through open and honest communication we molded my training plan along the way to fit my goals and my life. As I improved, we pushed harder. When my body or mind needed a break, we took a step back. And beyond just the physical training she helped me change my ways to lead a healthier lifestyle. Lauren truly transformed my life. So where am I now? Well I not only completed that half marathon, I finished in just 2 hours and 4 minutes. This was just 4 minutes over my goal time in what was considered to be “devastating race conditions”. I barley break a sweat at a 10 minute pace. My new comfortable is sub 9, and if I push myself I can break 8!!! I don’t think twice about heading out for a “short” 5 mile run now, in fact I ran 10 miles yesterday! No prep, no plan, I just ran! I have another half marathon in the works for June and come Fall I’ll get with Lauren again to start our plan for my very first full!! I’m truly amazed by how much I have improved in such little time. I’m excited to continue to work together to break new distances, new speeds, new goals. There’s no stopping me now… I have more miles to go!
